Excerpt from Flicker

Had a little fun today while discovery writing.  I am trying to figure out my main character by throwing him into character breaking or defining moments.  I’ll post some more as I continue to explore Gryr’s limits, motivations and goals.

Flicker Excerpt

Pain lanced through Grysr’s body, his legs tremored with every step.  The snow fell hard and fast upon the struggling boy.  As he trudged through the dense powder, the falling ice filled his prints instantly.  He had to move faster, the cold wasn’t the only thing trying to steal Gryr’s life.  Behind him a blur cut through the sheet of snow falling from the dark sky.

“You’re persistent boy…” The voice was barely audible through the weather.

Gryr turned, knowing he shouldn’t have.  As he turned to face the direction of the voice, a glow kissed his freezing skin.  A pyre of fire tore a hole through the blanketing snow.  Gryr forced his muscles to obey as he threw himself to the ground.  The dense snow welcomed him and surrounded him in comfort.  The frozen water formed around him, beckoning him to give up and close his eyes.  The idea was quickly burned from his head as the menacing voice crept in once more.

“Giving up so easily?  Too bad you are nothing without your little bodyguard.”  The figure reached the broken and defeated Gryr.  Standing over his prey, the man lifted his hand and held a whirling angry ball of fire to Gryr’s face.  Ash and ember lacerated the mans hand and arm showing Gryr that his hunter was no novice.  The heat began to defrost the boys face, within the flames he saw his end.  The life he once had, the friends he never made, the decisions that led up to this.  In one breathe he said goodbye to his life and hello to his death.

As the heat grew and Gryr prepared for his end, a deafening explosion blasted through everyone’s ear drums.  There was no fire, no end, just broken ear drums and a blast of violent wind from a singular point behind Gryr.
