Writetober Day 4

Freeze

“Are you okay?!”  Tom worryingly asked above the army of ironclad soldiers charging around them.

‘What the hell…’  It was all that came to Kyle’s mind.  He was lost as he tried to make sense of what was in front of him.  He wasn’t in his house, he wasn’t wearing his clothes, and he wasn’t even sure if he was in the United States.

All around him men were charging over a hill, banners splattered with blood and dirt were waving at the crest.  His mind couldn’t grasp what was happening, moments ago, he was standing in his house putting on the black ring.

“Kyle!  What’s the order?  We need to move!”  Tom’s strange words ripped Kyle to the present.

“What?”  It was the only word he could get out.

“The Ice Mages are pushing our front; the men are tired and falling.  Do we continue to take the hill?”  Tom shouted from under his steel helmet.

An unearthly roar shook the world around the men as they halted in fear.  Silence followed the roar as everyone stood, frozen, staring at Kyle, waiting to receive an order.  Before Kyle could throw any words from his mouth, a massive monstrosity climbed over the hill.  Its icy blue eyes scanned the standing army, searching.  With a devious grin, it locked eyes with Kyle.

“Welcome.”  The monster didn’t speak the words, but they played in Kyle’s mind.

With a massive inhale the demon opened its mouth and spewed blue hell down the hill.  The soldiers had no chance, in a flash they were frozen where they stood.  The freezing wave continued down the hill growling as it barreled towards Kyle.

“Kyle!”  Tom’s words pierced Kyle’s mind, forcing him to open his eyes.  “Are you okay?”  Tom’s words were softer now.

Kyle frantically looked around.  He was home, he was on the floor, but he was home.

“What the hell happened?”  Kyle grudgingly forced the words out.

“You tell me, you put the ring on, took your glasses off and then fell.”

“The ring.”  Kyle looked to his hand, the ring was gone.  “Where is it?”

“I threw it in the trash, the second you collapsed I ripped it off your finger.  It did not want to let go.”

“You were wearing armor, the was a medieval army, I think I was a commander, and there was this dragon thing that breathed ice.”  Kyle began to ramble.

“I am going to pretend I know what you are talking about.  Listen, this shit is crazy.  The voice, the ring, all of it.  We need to get rid of that thing.”  Tom helped Kyle sit up.

“Yea, you’re right.  I’ll get rid of it, but I need to rest first.”  Kyle slowly stood as his body ached, it felt as if he was truly in that battle.  “How long was I out?”  Kyle asked as he noticed the time.

The two men sat for some time and talked about the events that occurred, after a bit, they began to laugh and joke, ending the night on positive thoughts.  Later that night, Kyle thought about telling Michelle all that happened, but he chose not to and avoided worrying her.  Instead he laid in bed with her cuddled up to him.  He couldn’t sleep though, his mind kept going back to that battle, the voice, and the ring.  In that moment, Kyle made a decision, he got up from his bed and made his way into the kitchen.  Looking one last time in to the bedroom, Kyle pulled out the garbage and plucked the ring that was tucked under food and paper.

“Let’s see what this is about.”  Kyle plunged his finger through the ring.

Day 4 done, that was crazy, I hope you guys and gals are enjoying it.  Now, get ready for Ash’s Day 3!

Day 3 – Bait
Creak.
Each step made a noise. She was not going to be quiet. The house was so empty, it simply echoed everywhere. Debris was all over the place. 54 Raymond Street looked to have been abandoned for quite some time.  Soe looked at the key in her hand. ‘I got in. Do I ready need this?’  She squeezed it, feeling the slight prick on her skin. She took her last two steps and made it to the top. She was now on the second floor. It instantly had a different feel.
“Hello?”
Silence.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Soe let out a sigh. “Am I stupid? What was I thinking?” She quietly whispered to herself. She stared at the key in her hand once more. It was a beautiful key. The top looked to be smoothly hand carved with two crevasses on each side of it. Three weird characters where written across it.  Then she heard it. A knock.
Her heart dropped. Adrenaline began to pump through her as fear fell into the pit of her stomach. ‘What the fuck was that?’  It was silent once again. Maybe her mind was playing tricks?  ‘That was definitely a knock. Maybe something fell.’
Soe took a big breath and attempted to regain her composure.
Knock. Knock.
She looked to her left. It definitely originated in that direction.
‘Fuck. Do I really want to be a sterotypical dumb horror movie chick right now?’
Her feet began walking in the direction of the knocks. She was mindless again. A feeling in her chest was now growing. It felt like adrenaline but the rush concentrated near her throat. It felt like it was radiating. ‘I must be having a stroke’
Soe looked down the hallway and looked at the three doors up ahead. One was agape, the second and third were closed. The feeling near her throat was now radiating and overwhelming. She reached for the second door and it opens easily.
She takes a breath to try to calm her anxiety. ‘Cool, cool, cool, cool…..’
The room is rundown. Grey wallpaper is curling off the walls. The stench of mold makes its way through the hallway. The carpet is worn, with some patches being rundown to the hardwood floor beneath. It had no windows with added a weariness to it.
Knock. Knock……knock.
It was louder. It was in the room with her. She froze. ‘Where. The. Fuck…..oh God. I’m gonna die.’
Soe clenched her chest and bent over, trying to garner control of the situation around her. She moved in a 180 direction to leave when she saw it.
WELCOME HOME SOE was sprawled on the wall in a red paint. “W-…..what the fucking shit? What is happening?”
Everything was beginning to spiral. The feeling in her chest was overtaking her and it felt like the room was spinning. Soe fell to her knees. She couldn’t handle it anymore.
“Put your hands on the ground. Try to ground yourself.”
The voice came from behind her. ‘I want to faint. I’m probably going to die. Why….why did I do this?’
“I have the answer.”
She stayed frozen. ‘What the….’
The woman’s voice was steady, confident and almost gentle. She began to take steps towards Soe.
“I see you took the bait. I promise to explain everything soon enough. For now, rest.”
Soe knew this voice somehow. ‘Wait, it’s the lady. I-it’s….she’s not…’
The woman put her hand on Soe’s back. She felt a powerful surge coarse through her. She felt no pain. She was numb to everything. ‘Is this….death? Am I….is it over?’ Tears began to stream down her cheeks as darkness took over her vision.
‘What have I done….?’

  1. Day 4 – Freeze
    “FREEZE!”
A light shone on his back. He was surrounded, guns drawn from all sides. He dropped the bag but had what he had come for. ‘I’ve waited so long….’ A smile ran across his face as he put his hands up.
“I don’t want to hurt anyone,” Jasper announced.
The police weren’t sure how to respond. It took a moment for someone to finally step up. “I don’t think we have to worry about that,” the sergeant said, coming closer to his perp, gun still up.
“Do you know what I took?”
“No, but I don’t think it’s anything that could kill me.” The sergeant reached for his handcuffs. “Just come with us, don’t be making empty threats and we’ll be all right.”
Jasper took a deep breath in. ‘It’s time, my love.’ He dropped the item in his hand onto the ground. The sergeant took a step back and looked at the grey, metallic prism on the ground. It was icosahedron in shape, shiny and barely a threat.
The sergeant chucked to himself. He bent over and picked it up from the ground.
“Well, well. How scary….” He brought it up to his eye level and observed each side carefully.
“We live our lives supposing things are as they appear to be when that is almost never the case,” Jasper said ever so softly. “Vaknid.”
“V- what did you sa-” The sergeant couldn’t finish his sentence. The prism began turning a bright red. The red began to infiltrate through the sergeant’s finger, up his arm and now through the veins on his neck. It was taking over and at a quick pace.
“You’ve made a magnificent bait. You will awalen somewhere else. You will not die. And before you all shoot, would you like to observe?” Jasper acted like a ringleader of some sick show.
But he got his wish, he had managed to capture an audience.
The red at this point had overtaken the sergeant’s entire body. His eyes were completely lit up in fire and his body glowed a deep red. Soon, he was so bright, the light blinded everyone.
It was then that the metamorphosis began. Long hair spewed out, a beautiful mixture of red and orange, and the shape of a female body began to take form.
As this unraveled, Jasper stepped forward, reached inside the bag he had dropped. He took out a hooded black cloak, satin.
The bright red light began to finally diminish, as did the police force that had begun to collapse around them, unable to deal with the power filtering through the earthly plane.
A girl now laid before Jasper. She was on her knees, in a fetal position. He took the black cloak and covered her.
“Welcome back my love. We have much to do. More people to find.” Jasper lifted her up; she was still unconscious. “We can finally begin. I’ve been told it is our time….”
Jasper simply walked away from the scene, disappearing into the dark of the night.
