Writetober Day 5
Build
Kyle couldn’t focus at work, he was too busy drawing up designs for a wall. The words from his co-workers and managers were hums in the distance as he quickly worked on structure details and points of entry for his fortification plans.
“Kyle, anything to add to Carol’s presentation?” His director asked.
Tearing away from the paper he was aggressively drawing on, Kyle simply shook his head, barely making the word no come from his mouth.
It had been one week since Kyle had his experience when putting on the ring. Since that first time, Kyle wore the ring every night as he slept. Each night he was taken to that same world only to wake up with even more questions. It was the same world as the first time, a medieval battle worn land. The difference was, he never went back to that battlefield, or that dragon monstrosity. By the end of the week, it was too much to keep inside. After what Tom had gone through and being too afraid to scare Michelle, Kyle didn’t have many options on who to talk to, so he turned to the only person he thought would know about this, his mom.
“Hey Kyle, what’s going on?” His mom’s voice over the phone was surprisingly relaxing.
“I’ve got an early day at work today, want to grab some lunch? Vine and Table, twelve o’clock?”
“Sure, I can finish up in the garden by then.”
The rest of the morning flew by as Kyle finished his blueprints for a surrounding stone wall. It was very detailed, with designated battlements for archers and stone dropper; special detail to the entryways and how they closed as well.
“Mom, did grandpa ever mention anything about a village?” The two had just about finished up their lunch and had the usual catching up already done. “Or dreams of any kind?”
His mom gently stared at him, reading her son as she always did when he was younger. “Is that what those doodles on the napkin are about?” She paused, seeing Kyle’s tiredness and excitement battling on his face. “I used to think your grandpa was a very strange man. As a child he would tell me the most amazing bedtime stories about warriors, monsters, and everyday people becoming heroes. I never gave it much thought, and always thought they were stories from books. Until, one day I noticed that no one else’s fairytales were like the ones he told me.”
Kyle was entranced by what his mom was telling him, he mentally begged her to continue.
“You got his ring, didn’t you?” His mother smiled. “Did you bring it here?”
Kyle was almost knocked to the ground as his mother smiled when she asked about the ring. “I do have it!” He tried not to yell.
Digging through his jacket’s pocket he pulled out the worn carved box that held the ring and opened it to show his mom.
As the box opened to reveal the ring, his mother’s face said everything he didn’t want to hear.
“It’s black, why is it black?” The voice laughed in his ears as his mother said the words.
“What do you mean?” Kyle felt sick as he saw his mom’s reaction.
“The ring was silver, it shined like it was just polished at all times of the day.” Her brow furrowed inquisitively. “Has anything else happened with the ring?”
Michelle wore it once, it made her blank, and there is a voice I hear.” Kyle tried to quickly pass over the voice part.
“Vordmir?” Kyle’s mother quietly asked herself.
“Who? What did you say?” Kyle asked.
“Nothing. Did Michelle tell you what she saw while she wore the ring? She was blank because she was there, like I’m assuming you have been.” Kyle’s mother closed the ring box and focused on her son.
“No, we really didn’t talk about it, I ripped the ring off her finger and threw it away. We moved on and didn’t talk about it.”
“That’s going to change. I am coming over tonight and we are all talking. I must swing by home first.” His mother readied her stuff to leave.
“Tom knows some stuff to…” Kyle felt ashamed, like a young boy that touched something he shouldn’t have.
“Get him over tonight as well.” Kyle’s mom got up to leave. “And whatever they are having you build, can wait. I need your full attention tonight.” With that, Kyle’s mom left.
