Writetober Day 8

Frail

                “Where is his home?”

“I…I don’t know.  Please I have a family.”  The peasant wept between his words.

“Lies…you reek of the outsider.”  The faceless shadow spoke as it slowly smothered the poor man.

Around the scene, the forest was quiet, the animals knew to stay away.  The closest village was hours away, there would be no intruders.

“P…p…please sir, I know nothing.”  The pail and dirty man spoke to the dark figure surrounding him.

“You’re weak.  But you already know that.”

“Sir, please….”

“I can give you strength.  I can allow you to shed your frail body.  You can have a purpose.”  The shadow seemed to caress the man.  “Tell me where the outsider calls home.  What village does he reside in?”

“Please, I do not know.  I don’t know about an outsider.”  The man wept in fear.

“The man named Kyle!”  The shadow spoke harshly.  “Tell me and I will end your pain.  All you will know is power within my ranks.”  Kindness oozed from the shadow.  “You will not worry about gold, food, or safety.”

Through tears, the malnourished peasant focused on the shadow.  “What of my family?”

“They will never know pain and suffering again.”  The shadow seemed to smile.

“His home is found in Krinkledag.”  The defeated man slumped to the dirt.

“You have done well.  Accept your reward.”  The shadow darkened and surrounded the broken man.  Smothering him, the shadow laughed as the man choked and grasped for air.  With his final thrusts the man laid, dead on the floor, his eyes open in terror.  The shadow pulled away from the dead man and took the rough shape of a faceless man.

“Rise and serve your new master.”

The dead man’s eyes clouded and turned an obsidian black.  Unnaturally shifting, the body rose to face its summoner.

“Go deliver freedom to your family.  Slaughter them all, release them from their pain.”

“Yes…Lord Vordmir.”
