Writetober Day 10 (Pattern)

I am having a lot of fun with these.  Although they aren’t hitting the 1,000 words I want, the story is coming together better than I expected.  Make sure to let me know your thoughts and I hope you are having fun reading these!

Writetober Day 10

Pattern

“I don’t get it.”  Kyle’s mom stared at the rings resting on the kitchen table.

Kyle’s ring was black, empty of color and light.  To its left, his grandmothers ring seemed to swirl with black, its silver color was tainted with an obsidian tint.  His mother’s ring barely had silver left in it, the corruption that consumed Kyle’s ring was almost complete in his mothers.

“I don’t understand this.  This can’t be Vordmir’s doing.”  Kyle’s mother spoke softly.  “He shouldn’t have the power to do this.  We must be missing something.”

“You don’t think an evil demon monster lord has the ability to corrupt the rings?  Isn’t he the symbol of corruption or something?”  Tom tried his best to keep up.

“From what my father told me, he’s just a man.  The fact that he has the ability to interfere in our world through the ring is something else, something more powerful than him.”  Everyone listened intently to Kyle’s mother.  “We need to go in, you three need to go in.  Start in Krinkledag and find out what you can.”

“What are we supposed to do, walk up to villagers and ask them if they’ve seen the lord of corruption?”  Tom was trying his best.  “I don’t really think they will be too keen on talking to three strangers from another world.”

“They know us, well they know me.”  Kyle interrupted.  “My grandpa helped build Krinkledag, my family is known there, our ‘abilities’ are known there.  It’s the safest and best place to start searching.”

“And what exactly are we looking for?”  Tom but in.

“A pattern.”  Michelle spoke.  “Something is connecting these rings to him, rings that are attached to your family specifically.”  Michelle picked up the grandmother’s ring.  “This ring is less corrupted than the other two, but I’d assume it has been used more than Mrs. Advera’s ring.”  Everyone sat in silence as Michelle continued.  “It could be a blood connection.  Maybe this ring isn’t as corrupted because she didn’t have a blood connection to your grandpa, that Mrs. Advera had to him?  That would make the corruption slower to take effect possibly.  Not only do we need to find out about Vordmir, we need to find out more about the rings.”

“You’re amazing!”  Kyle blurted out.

“Okay, there are some dots to connect, but how do we get more info on the rings?  Isn’t this kind of everyone that knows?”  Tom asked.

“The enchanter would know more, his name was Welton.  He worked with my father to make my ring, maybe he made my mother’s.”  Mrs. Advera spoke.  “That is, if he’s still alive.  It has been a long time.”

“Alright…It looks like we are going and finding this Enchanter.”  Kyle grabbed his grandfather’s ring.

“I’m assuming I am part of that ‘we’.”  Tom grabbed Mrs. Advera’s ring.

Kyle, Michelle and Tom sat around the table.  Giving one last look, they slipped the rings around their fingers.  Kyle closed his eyes and focused on the ring, he allowed what flowed through the ring to envelope him.  The other two watched him and followed suit, in moments, the three were in another world.  They blinked from existence leaving Mrs. Advera alone in the house, at least she thought.

“The daughter…alone.”  A voice hungrily spoke.

Fear crept in Mrs. Advera.  “You have no power here!”  She shouted into the corners of the house.

“No…soon I will…. soon your world will be mine.”  The heaviness in the house disappeared, she was truly alone now.
