Writetober Day 17 (Ornament)

I am still working on the pacing for Writetober.  Personally I am worried about a rushed ending, but I think I’ll be going over 1,000 words a day going forward.  That will allow a proper ending to this tale.  Leave a comment bellow and let me know what you think!

Writetober Day 17

Ornament

Dullness welcomed Kyle and his friends, the vibrant world they left was replaced by muted skies.  The earth was broken and scattered, large sections of land suspended in air, warped and twisted with grey.  Their footsteps echoed as if in a chamber, there was no horizon, just thick silver fog outside the reaches of land.  Large black pillars sprouted from the ground as trees would do.  Their black roots burrowed wide across the fractured land that surrounded the trees.

“Don’t go near those.”  Michelle gestured to the twisted black sprouting from the ground.  Obsidian mist oozed from the branches, reaching out into The Wild.

“Is that the corruption?”  Tom made sure to stand close to his friends.

“Which part?”  Kyle was trying to gather his bearings, figuring out where to go.

“Good point.”  Tom adjusted the pack, unbeknownst to him, it shook it return.

The air was thick, it weighed on the three explorers as they began to traverse the shattered grey realm.  With every step deeper into the unknown, the world in front of them grew from the mist.  Before them, a structure began to creep from the nothingness of the horizon.  It towered high into the sky, the single spire was lacerated with fissures of black.  At its base, a sole altar was carved into the massive obelisk.

“Uh, guys, my packs moving.”  Tom ripped the bag off his shoulders.

“Don’t drop it!”  As the words left Kyle, Tom had dropped the pack, letting it collide with the ground.

“My bad…”  Tom was more afraid than sorry.

The bag laid on the floor, rustling at random seconds.  Michelle stepped closer, figuring out her thoughts as she reached down to it.  Her hands pulled the sphere from the pack, it was vibrating and rippling as it hovered over her hands.  The orb was no longer black, it shined a polished silver, cutting the haze around it.

“Michelle, your ring…”  Kyle nodded toward her hand.

The ring that hugged her finger was shining in its silver glory.  The black haze that once tainted the metal was gone, beauty was left in its place.

“Trust me?”  Michelle looked to Kyle.

“Of course.”  His eyes told her.

Michelle steadily walked to the altar that was gracefully carved into the massive spire.  Waves formed from the ripples as Michelle neared the altar.  “Okay.”  Michelle released the orb above the smooth surface of altar.  It hovered above the altar, bouncing within itself as a shock erupted up the spire.

Michelle stepped back as she watched silver blast through the spire.  The fissures that decorated the enormous obelisk became escape routes for the silver light.  As the wave of energy reach the tip of the structure, silver had replaced the black that once lived in the spire.  Before the explorers, a sliver beacon radiated light to the world around them.

“To those that travel these lands, allow my beacons to light your way.  May these ornaments keep your hope alive, and the corruption at bay.”  The voice echoed across the shattered earth surrounding the obelisk.

“What in the fuck?”  Tom’s jaw was still on the floor.

“Kyle, that was him!  It had to have been.”  Michelle faced her husband as silver light eradicated the haze around them.

Tears filled Kyle’s eyes as he looked at the world around him.  Whatever magic erupted from the spire, created a field of peace around it, keeping the corruption at bay.

“There’s two more to find.”  Michelle spoke to the group, she held the sphere in her hands.

“What makes you say that?  Aren’t we don’t here?”  Tom was hoping to be done.

“There are three rings, if he built these, he must have made one for each ring.”  Michelle studied the spire as she spoke, the orb was calm in her hands.  “These aren’t just ornaments, they are a trail.  These spires will lead us to something he wants us to see.”

“And that orb is the key to activate the spires.”  Kyle finished Michelle’s sentence.  “We have to find the other two.”  He looked at his black ring, and then to the haze filled horizon.  The silhouette of a dragon seemed to glide behind the mist.

“We should hurry, I don’t think we are alone.”  Kyle took Michelle’s hand, her silver ring shining as the three walked toward the haze.
