Writetober Day 30 (Catch)

Writetober Day 30

Catch

Michelle’s smile warmed Kyle, the two were sitting in their living room.  Outside the crisp autumn day was setting with pink and blue skies.  Everything was right, everything was normal, they were happy.

“You have to go.”  Michelle’s words were peaceful.

“I can be late to work.”  He sat on the couch running his fingers through her hair.

“No, you need to go.”  Her smile turned serious.  “You’re not done.”

Kyle was confused, he tried to read her face, but it was serious.  There was knowledge in her eyes and Kyle couldn’t figure out what was happening.

“Tom and your mom need you.  We need you to keep going.”  Michelle was focused on her husbands’ eyes.  Outside the skies grew darker, a storm lingered on the setting sun.

Kyle stared at his wife’s slate green eyes, they always calmed him during the worst times.  His eyes filled with tears as he noticed her smile.  She was saving him, she was his biggest supporter and even in death she didn’t stop.

“I’m not strong enough…”  Kyle forced the words through a tight throat.

“I wouldn’t be here if you weren’t strong, you alone are keeping me alive.  Use that strength and save your mom.”  Her words sounded distant.

“Kyle!”  The raspy voice ripped into Kyle’s ears.

He ignored it, he continued to stare at Michelle, memorizing her face.

“We do not have time for you to die!  We must catch the host!”  The voice shook the walls of Kyle’s home.

“I can’t…”  Kyle spoke to his wife.

“Yes, you can.  Go, and remember I love you.”

Pain devoured Kyle as his eyes opened in panic.  He was alive, broken and bruised, but alive.  Vordmir stood above him, anger and despair on his face.

“Use that damn ring and get us to your world!”

Kyle went to clench his fist and yelled in agony, his shattered arm rejected the idea of movement.  “My arm, I can’t use the ring.”

“Then we are dead!  Give me the ring, so that I may do the job that is needed!”  Vordmir eye’s lit up as he stared at the ring.

Kyle screamed in anger as his body revolted against movement.  His only option couldn’t have been to give up the ring to Vordmir.  It couldn’t end that way.  He focused, he thought of his wife, his best friend, the sacrifice his grandfather made; Kyle had to be stronger.  The ring glowed as Kyle cherished his memories, he remembered his happiest moments with his wife, the hours playing games with Tom, and even the brief periods with the lovely people of Krinkledag.  He had to be strong for everyone.

Kyle’s eyes shot open, they were coated in a silver light.  Thick bands sprang from the ring and hugged the broken bones riddling Kyle’s body.  Warmth seeped beneath his skin as the vibrant wrappings of light caressed and healed the man.  He was going to be stronger.

Wonderous shock was plastered on Vordmir’s face as he watched the man he knew as weak unleash the might of the ring upon himself.  Vordmir’s eyes tracked the pattern of silver that coursed beneath Kyle’s skin as it stained his skin like a tattoo.  Their eyes met, and Vordmir smiled as he stared at the pure light that emitted from Kyle’s eyes.

“I’m impressed.  It’s time to catch up for time lost.”  Vordmir held out a hand, a sign of respect from the ancient mage.

Kyle grabbed his hand, and in a flash of brilliance, they were gone.
