Novel November Day 6 Excerpt

Without words, the hunted man ran toward the white street and his freedom, away from the ravens.  Ulrik and Jul’s eyes flickered red as flames vomited from their hands and careened toward the escaping man.  Sera took chase, she crouched and gripped the earth beneath her.  With a flicker of her eyes she launched her light body through the air with her powerful hands.  For a moment, Sera took the form of that angel of death as she flew threw the air accompanied by a hail of fire.  To any normal person, the sight alone would have made them give up, but this man was clearly different.

Knocking over baskets and bails of hay that were stacked next to the stable, he continued to run, no flicker in sight.  Mere feet behind him, Sera crumbled the dirt covered ground as she landed.  Without wasting precious time, she went into a full sprint, praying to catch the man before he broke into the busy street.  Anger flashed on her face as she realized his plan.  The man had fooled her the entire day.

The whites of Trolingstad partook in a ritual at the sunset of every day.  To express their thanks to the gods for allowing the sun to rise, they would perform a ritual healing ceremony focused on the earth around them.  In unison, they would touch one another and summon the life rune that coursed within them.  The ceremony would create a blinding white light from everyone’s flicker and hands.

That bastard knew it all along, he was stalling them.  Rage leapt within Sera as she forced her legs to move faster.  It wasn’t enough, the man emerged from the alley as the blinding light erupted from the crowd in the street.  She was forced to close her eyes, if she hadn’t, no number of white flickers could have healed her destroyed sight.

The ritual ended, leaving the three ravens defeated in the alley.  Sera promised her and her team would leave Jarl Roth’s lands by nightfall.  She was not one to break a promise made to a Jarl, but now the choice was which Jarl to anger.  Did she return to Belrot with no prisoner, or did she stay until Taybus was captured?  At this point, she didn’t need to see his flicker, he was the man they searched for.

“What are we doing?”  Jul knew what was going through her mind, his question was meant to help her decide.

“We stay.”  Sera figured Jarl Roth could rot in Hel, it was better to anger a Jarl that you weren’t contracted to.
