Day 16
Compass
“We are lost aren’t we.” Michelle’s words were exhausted as she climbed the peak of a small mound of jagged stone. The world around her was filled with towering green trees as far as she could see.
“Nope. It’s pointing this way.” Alys pointed her sweat covered arm toward a dense ticket of overgrowth.
“You mean it’s pointing north?” Michelle released an annoyed breath. “You do know that a compass points north…not where we have to go.”
“Unless we have to go north.” A smile lit up on Alys’s face.
“But we don’t, so…”
“We aren’t lost.” Alys removed a granola bar from her well used pack. “Not a bad idea for a snack break though.”
“You are literally going to be the death of me.” Michelle made her way to the small clearing that her partner sat at, she drank hard from the water bladder that was slung on her back.
“Not a bad way to die!” Alys finished inhaling her snack as she produced the compass once more, Michelle made a point to get a view of the tiny device. “Hey! No peeking.” Alys clasped the compass shut. “This is a surprise hike, we will arrive at the destination when we are meant.”
“You literally watched Lord of the rings last night, and now you want to be a wizard?” Michelle laughed at the ridiculousness she was experiencing.
“Hush it, let’s get moving, daylight is burning fast.”
“Yeah, it burns real fast when we are lost.”
“I can’t hear you over this fun adventure we are having!” Alys shouted above the quiet that filled the forest.
Pain in my ass. “Why do I love you again?!” The sarcasm lept from Michelle.
“You’re staring at it!”
Michelle didn’t say anything, she didn’t disagree, but she wasn’t going to give Alys the satisfaction.
“Your silence means I’m right!” Alys trudged through the thick overgrowth like an overconfident peacock.
The two made their way through the shady grove of smaller, clumped trees as a dull roar began to fill the air.
“You really are taking me to kill me.” Michelle’s mind raced with ideas of what was creating the sound.
“Yep, my compass has been broken this whole time. We’ve just lost.” Michelle heard the joy in Alys’s words.
What are you up to? Michelle silently followed her girlfriend as the drumming roar grew more thunderous.
“Not too bad for being lost, huh?” Alys stood before a magnificent scene.
“Looks like your shitty compass worked.” Michelle’s jaw was dropped as she watched the torrent of white water careen over the side of the cliff before them. “It’s beautiful.” Her eyes were glued to the waterfall that collided with the river they stood at.
“Not as beautiful as you.”
“What?” Michelle turned to see Alys on a knee. Her eyes watered as she noticed a small box in her hand. “What are you…Oh my god, yes I will!”
“You’re supposed to let me ask!” Alys laughed as matching tears filled her eyes. She popped open the box to reveal a small and delicate diamond ring. “Will you marry me?”
“Absolutely.” Michelle’s answer was gentle and filled with the purest love.
The two embraced as the waterfall next to them roared in cheer.
“I’m glad you said yes, there’s no return on the ring.” Alys laughed through falling tears.
