Writetober Day 18 (Moon)

“Guiding mother, I offer these gifts in your name.” The hooded woman presented a bounty of fruits and vegetables.

“Guiding mother, I offer these gifts in your name.” A hooded man next to the bent over woman presented a collection of bottles.

The two sat in silence as the forest around them swayed beneath the night’s wind.

“Feels nice out here.” The man spoke first as he rose to a stand.

“Yeah, I am glad that the rain held.” The woman stood next to her husband. “The clouds are even gone.” She peered through the trees above her as she searched for the source of light among the black night.

“Want to try it?” The man checked the time on his phone. “We still have the babysitter for another hour.”

The woman’s eyes focused on the white belly of the impregnated moon that loomed high in the sky. “Sure, why not.”

The two huddled together as whispers formed between them. The husband broke away as he pulled a wand from his pocket. Slowly and gently he traced an invisible circle around the two of them. While he focused his entire body on the task, his wife softly spoke an incantation.

“Circles done.” He tucked the wand away and revealed an athame. He gently handed it to his wife.

“Priestess, we create this circle to focus on you.” The hooded woman placed the ornate black blade on the earth beneath her.

The husband and wife held hands as they focused their intentions on the glowing white beacon that hung high above them. They had tried the summoning ritual many times before, but they were never able to perform it during a full moon. However, that night was different, both had gotten out of work early enough to gather supplies and they were able to secure babysitting.

They didn’t consider themselves to be the purest forms of witches, but they surely could not practice in their suburban neighborhood.

“We call you down, to grace us with your presence.” Their voices were twins in the night.

Leaves and twigs kicked into the air around them as the wind roared to life. The couple kept their hands held as they steadied their focus to the front of their mind.

“Speak, my children.” The voice was quiet, it was as gentle as the moon’s glow.

The husband and wife let the emotions wash over them as their eyes filled with tears.

“Gracious mother, we thank you for answering our call.” The wife squeezed her husband’s hand tight as she spoke.

Them two embraced and held each other within the invisible circle they created.

“I love you.” The hooded woman stared deep into her husband’s eyes.

“I love you more.” He smiled back at her as they kissed, their only light came from the glorious moon that shined above.
