Writetober Day 22 (Open)

Day 22

Open

“Close it!  Seal the sigil!”  Thadeus clenched his holy symbol tight to his chest.

The men around him ran frantically as the swirling gusts of black mist coursed through the tomb.

“Close it!”  Thadeus tried his hardest to yell above the menacing roar of the torrents of air.  His knuckles were white as the cross he held creaked in his hands.

Either no one heard him, or no one cared to listen as the missionary struggled to stand in the cyclone that formed in the chamber.

“I’m sorry…I am sorry I made you all open it.”  The priest’s words were to himself as the men around him fell lifelessly to the cold stone floor.  “Heavenly father, hear my prayer.  I come to you in my hour of need, for your unyielding protection and forgiveness.”  His hands bled as he gripped the symbol with terrified filled intensity.  “Protect me Lord.”

A deep laugh ripped through the chamber, it mocked the poor priest that huddled in fear.  The roaring wind erased from existence as a voice crept from the opened coffin.

“Your god has no power here.”  The laugh returned with viciousness.

“Holy Mary, Mother of God-”

The cross erupted in flame as the priest threw it from his singed hands.

“You left your god when you chose to open my tomb.”  A thick black fog began to roll out of the coffin.

“No…”  The priest forced himself to return to prayer as the laughter flooded his ears once more.  It was fruitless, the priest welcomed the despair into his body, he failed…he abandoned his faith.

“Come.  Open yourself to the truth, embrace your new god.”  The thick shadow formed into an abomination of a man.

The priest said no words, he held his arms open wide.  I embrace you, my lord.  The priest opened his eyes as he released the fear that gripped him.

“As it should be.”  The shadow torn man towered over the priest, his priest.
