Novel November Day 4 (Chapter 4 Excerpt)

Chapter 4

A young woman stood, bare, in a black soaked chamber of stone.  The cold air sat heavy and motionless around her as she controlled her steady breath.  Save for her pale skin, there was nothing else that took shape within the void of the chamber.

“Kitaga.”  The woman didn’t move as the voice echoed through the chamber walls.

“Kitaga, your trial will begin.  Focus on life.”  A second voice boomed from high above.

She took a deep inhale and focused with a purpose.  Through the darkness, shimmers of white light glinted from beneath her skin.  Her face struggled to tense with stress, but with a forced breath she relaxed the muscles that didn’t need to work.

“Kitaga, bring the essence forward.”  The third voice was soft and kinder as it echoed around the woman.

“Kitaga.”  The name echoed throughout the black soaked chamber.

“Kitaga, focus on life.”  A second voice boomed across the stone walls.

In the center of the chamber, a figure sat, her eyes were closed, and her breathing barely existed.

“Kitaga, feel the essence course through you.  Bring it to the surface.”  The final voice was soft, there was more compassion among the words.

The girl’s eyes shot open as a white light began to simmer on the surface of her skin.  Beneath her eye lids the white begged and fought to be released.  She breathed, a focused breath to control the power that surged within her.  Slowly, the white that clawed for freedom from her eyes faded.  She stood and allowed the black cold to envelope her bare skin.

“Kitaga, bring forth your essence.”  The voice blasted away the silence that clung to the dark chamber walls.

The young woman reached her arms out wide and stretched her fingers within the dark grasps of the cold sanctuary.  A thin white glow flickered to life at her fingertips and quickly began to climb up her arm.  White light began to stretch in a thin membrane across her entire body, it boiled from beneath her skin.  She opened her eyes and let her light radiate brightness across the massive stone walls that surrounded her.  Her hazel eyes admired the light that danced on the surface of her skin, after a moment of reflection, the girl dropped her arms and released the light from her skin.  The chambers cold darkness latched onto her once more.

“Kitaga, your trial is over.  You may leave.”

Without hesitation, she turned and walked through the darkness; her bare feet gently kissed the cold stone beneath her as she exited the damp chamber.

The sun was bright on her pale skin, her eyes burned as if she’d been slumbering in the blackness for far longer than was the case.  Comfort draped over her freckled shoulders as a heavy bear skin blanket embraced her.

“Elder Eryla was in there, I could hear her voice.”  The young girl breathed into her hands through the words.

“We expected that to be the case, she was the one that selected you herself.”  A weathered woman rubbed warmth into the young woman before her.  “Kitaga, you have done well.”

“Please…”  There was a sigh in her words as she pleaded with the woman holding her.

“I am sorry…Kit, you have done well.”  The older woman smiled.  “A mother never liked to hear that her daughter hates her name.”

“Mother, I don’t…I just hear it all the time.  The elders can’t speak without saying it, I just want to hear something that cold emotionless voices don’t call me.”  Kit touched her forehead to her mothers.”  I’m sorry, I love my name.  I just…”
