Novel November Day 12 (Chapter 12 Excerpt)

Chapter 12

The chamber was cold as Kit entered its dark embrace.  She left her mother in the early morning sun as her exit sealed behind her.  Like every time before, Kit’s eyes widened to absorb as much light as possible, but like each one of those times, there was no light within the tomb she stood in.

“Kitaga, today is your final trial before The Order determines your next step.”  The first voice boomed across the cold stone walls that towered over her.

“Do you understand?”  A second male voice trailed behind the first.

Kit furrowed her brow as she tried to place the voices.  She had never heard them during previous trials.

“This is when you answer, child.”  A third voice joined the conversation, it too was foreign to Kit.

“I understand.  I am sorry.”  She found calmness within her.  Countless times before her nerves wretched within her gut, but that day…it was different.

“Your apology is worthless to us.  We are here to evaluate you, present your essence.”

Well screw you too, asshole.  Kit thought about apologizing again, but she resigned to enjoying the smirk on her face instead.

“You are the only one you need to prove anything to.”  Her father’s words played in her head as she began to focus on what burned through her.  The itch swelled within her as Kit focused her breath, it was always the same, an incessant itch crawled across her body as the white essence bubbled to the surface of her skin.  Like a campfire roaring to life, Kit’s skin glowed with a gentle intensity.  The chamber that surrounded her began to reveal splashes of its grey color as the light from Kit radiated outward.

“Enough.”  The first voice returned in its harsh tone.

Kit released the power that burned within her as the chamber plunged into the darkness once more, save for one torch whose flame danced in the distance.

Was that always there?  Kit questioned her nerves as she worried if she was too anxious to see her surroundings.

“Your next task is before you.  Focus your essence toward the torch.”

Focus on the torch…  Kit worked the words in her mind.  The ideas of what the booming voice riddled her.

“Is there a problem?”  The third, harshest voice rang out.

“No.  I-”  She bit her tongue.  “No.”  There was a time to pick at the annoyed men she assumed stood above her, but that was not it.p

“Then complete the task.”  The second voice returned from its long silence.

Kit willed the white essence to stir once more.  As before, the itch grew and stretched across her skin.  Focus on the torch.  She felt the essence pool into her arms, as it swelled near her hand.  Focus…  Kit raised her open palm toward the torch as she willed the pure white light to leap from her skin.

Sparks of white hiccupped from her palm as they formed into an intense beam of radiant light that lanced through the darkness.  Kit’s eyes widened in amazement as the white essence that only ever simmered on her skin tore through the air and obliterated the torch.

Wow.  Kit relaxed her arms and released the essence that she held within her.  She stared at her palms with wonder.  She had known that concentrating the light, or any other essence, could have explosive results, but to see it first hand was…addictive.  Kit killed the thought and focused on herself once more as she brought her arms to her sides, she awaited the voices.
