Novel November Day 8 Excerpt (20,446 words)

Ravens don’t fail, it’s what she kept telling herself as she entered the woods, leaving Ulrik and Jul behind with the horses.  She knew they understood, they might not have liked it, but they let her be.  Ravens don’t fail, the words burned in her mind as she thought of the family she had.  Jul was her best friend, she was lucky enough to train with him, he was the first face she saw when she completed the trials.  He trusted her religiously, and she returned the favor, at least she hoped he knew that.

Ravens don’t fail.  She thought of Ulrik, the newest member of the family.  He had joined them soon after he go his wings, the tattoo that spanned his back.  She selected him herself after he had been ready to sign a contract.  Fortunate for her, he didn’t know the monster that Jarl Belrot was, then again, what man of power wasn’t a fiend.  He had become a great addition to her family, his young eyes and keen awareness cemented his role.  Sera held onto the memories as she walked deeper into the trees, the moons light was casting long shadows onto the root covered ground.

As she continued climbing over stumps and fallen trees, a burning white light caught her eye.  The light seemed to dance in the distance as what created it lumbered over the same forest floor as Sera.  In a flash her mind focused, all the thoughts falling away, the instinct beaten into her boiled to the surface.  Green flickered in her eyes.

The monstrosity matched her speed as it barreled toward her, a roar leapt from its broken jaws.  Sera knew it wasn’t a roar to scare her, the Runewalker was calling, informing the others there was flicker to be consumed.  She had a limited window to let her rage out on the unlucky beast.  She was slightly upset she didn’t get to face a blight, but this would do.  A beam of intense light radiated from its hand, snapping her attention back.  Sera hunched low and let it pass over her head.  White’s were known for their healing energy, but as a Runewalker, the rune was pure radiant essence, disintegrating anything with flicker.

Sera closed the distance quickly, with her strength filled hand, she gripped what little clothes wrapped the glowing husk.  It roared in protest as she swung her hips and catapulted the monster across her body.  It crashed through the branches of the mighty trees that made the forest, finally coming to a stop in a heap of glowing light.  Sera wasn’t done, there was no fatigue to calm her down; she thanked the training for that.  Not giving the beast a chance, she dislodged a large stone from the ground.  With little effort, she hurled the boulder through the air.  Before the collision could bring peace of mind to the raven, a hot beam of white light eradicated the boulder, it rained rubble on the earth.

The Runewalker was mad, if it could feel emotion that is.  Sera grinned, she wanted more fighting.  The consumed human sprinted toward the woman in black, its burning eyes focused on its prey.  Feet before Sera, the monster blasted the ground creating a cloud of rocks, grass and wood that destroyed her vision.  Sera instantly rolled to her left, narrowly dodging the barrage of burning fists that blasted through the debris.  Returning the favor, she countered with a heaving fist into the abominations gut, cracking what she was certain was its spine.  The monstrosity didn’t roar, it didn’t move.  Crumpled in a heap of consumed flesh, its bright glow faded and died.
