The Bright Woods were quiet that morning, the sun’s light barely breaking through the dense canopy high above. Gryr thought it was fascinating as to how the forest got its name. Drekner had told them that the over populations of Runewalkers and Blights in the woods created an unnatural brightness from their flickers glow. At times guards reported whole sections of the forest being lit as if on fire, burning with all the colors.
“So, Runewalkers.” Of course Nil was the first to speak.
“And Blights. Can’t forget them too.” Elryk chimed in, his eyes glued to the shadows dancing around them. “How are we doing this?” He didn’t ask anyone specifically, but they all waited for one response.
“We stay together. The pack is stronger together.” Ryk focused on the eyes that stared at him.
Besides Gryr and Ryk, the other’s didn’t know of the wolves, but Gryr agreed, they were a pack. It wasn’t long before the group had their first Runewalker in their sights. It was a shambling ice crusted woman. Her eyes were sharp blue, chunks of her head were replaced with cracked sheets of ice. She hadn’t picked up their sent, the had the upper hand.
Over the week, they had worked on group tactics, if they ever had the ability to fight beside another shaman. Nil leapt into action first, conjuring angry balls of air from his hands, he launched like an arrow into the air. He was the distraction, the beast locked her eyes on him as he flipped over he head, rotating her back toward the rest of the group. The moment Nil’s feet touched the ground, Hylda sprinted toward the turned Runewalker, her palms thrusting air propelling her faster than her legs would allow naturally. Ice vomited from the monsters hands as she readied to devour the young shamans flicker. Nil grinned at her as Hylda’s fist shattered one of the Runewalkers knees, dropping her to the dew covered ground. Straightening his hand, Nil sliced the air above the woman’s head, creating a blade of air. The Runewalker’s screams ended as her head was cleanly separated from her body.
“We will be done by midday at this rate!” Elryks words were answered by a two harsh screams from the darkness behind them.
Two streams of molten anger splattered across onto branches as they careened toward the shamans. Gryr was the first to move, he rolled to his right, coming to a stop on his feet. His eyes met the first fire consumed Runewalker. The hunger and hatred in its eyes sent chills down the boys spine, but he couldn’t let it stop him, he had to act, and fast. Gryr’s legs forced him toward the monster that rocketed flames into the air. The flickerless boy dodged them with ease, thanks to Taybus’s agility training. Closing the gap faster than the beast expected, Gryr grabbed its hot wrists and locked them in place. He ignored the heat clawing at his leather wrapped hands and, like Noko taught them, positioned its palms at its face. The man’s consumed face seemed to grin as fire erupted from its palms, enveloping his own face. The heat was unbearable but Gryr needed to hold until help arrived. The leather straps that wrapped his hands burned and melted as his grip began to flip,. The runewalkers face was nearly melted off, but its goal was nearly accomplished. Gryr’s grip slipped.
“Got you.” Ryk’s hand gripped Gryr’s collar as his other hand blasted furious wind into the Runewalker.
